State-of-the-Art Medical Centers and Services
No one likes to be sick, but when the inevitable happens, it’s good to know that there are highly skilled medical professionals and quality facilities nearby. Saline County residents and employers rest assured that their medical needs will be satisfactorily met by one of the many area physicians, facilities, clinics or therapists.
One of the largest medical facilities in Southeastern Illinois is Harrisburg Medical Center (HMC), located in Harrisburg. This 86-bed, progressive hospital has approximately 50 physicians on staff. The doctors represent most major medical specialties, including cardiology, emergency medicine, ear/nose/throat, family practice, gastroenterology, gynecology, internal medicine, nephrology, oncology and radiation oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pathology, podiatry, psychiatry, pulmonology, radiology, surgery, and urology. Recent expansions included a new emergency area; a private, two-room mammography suite; ambulatory care; vastly increased rehabilitation service with physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, sports medicine and work hardening; Oncology & Infusion Unit; Behavioral Health Services ;and expanded surgery and endoscopy suites. Additional new services added to HMC’s offerings include osteoporosis testing, cataract surgery and sleep studies.
Guided by its values of compassion, collaboration, stewardship, integrity and respect, Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado is a not-for-profit health care facility dedicated to promoting the health and well-being of all of the people in the communities it serves. Ferrell Hospital has been a Critical Access Hospital since 2003, a distinction given to only 40 hospitals in the state. This gives hospital staff an advantage as they serve the needs of the area. In October 2004, the State of Illinois granted a Certificate of Exemption for Ferrell Hospital to return to local ownership. A local board of directors has been assigned to operate the new Ferrell Hospital Foundation. The same quality health care that has been provided at Ferrell for the past 79 years will continue to be offered for the surrounding communities. “We at Ferrell look forward to a very bright future as a stand-alone facility serving Saline County and the surrounding communities. Egyptian Public and Mental Health Department serves Saline, Gallatin and White counties with a large variety of programs, some of which are based on a sliding-fee scale. These include environmental serviceslike a food service program, water program, sewage program, solid waste management, vector control and local nuisance; behavioral health programs like crisis intervention, psychological evaluations, substance abuse programs, intensive case management and youth intervention; and public health programs, including home health care, WIC (Women, Infants and Children), immunization, family case management, family planning, HIV counseling, education and case management.
Southeastern Illinois College contributes to the well-being of area residents with an ongoing series of Wellness Workshops. These workshops, hosted in conjunction with various area health care agencies, cover topics such as heart disease, cancer awareness, smoking cessation and arthritis education. They are held on the campus of SIC and vary every semester.
Saline County is home to several nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities and pharmacies that benefit not only the seniors of the region, but their families as well. There are two assisted living facilities currently under construction in Saline County. Several new doctors have been locating into the county, specializing in areas like family practice, pediatrics and women’s wellness. Numerous physicians, dentists, optometrists, chiropractors and therapists round out the list of health care providers working for the wellness of Saline County.
