The Heart of the Community

The population of Saline County represents a virtual melting pot of religious beliefs and backgrounds. Like most Midwestern communities, its roots stem from our nation’s fundamental commitment to the most elemental personal freedoms - freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom to peaceably assemble.

Upon that solid foundation, many houses of worship have been built in the communities of Saline County. Harrisburg, the largest of the towns, is home to almost every Christian denomination, the majority being Protestant, along with an assortment of other faiths. Carrier Mills, Eldorado and Galatia serve as host to dozens of other congregations.

“One of the best compliments I ever received was when my colleagues in the legislature referred to my area of the state as the ‘Bible Belt,’” says David Phelps, Assistant Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation and founder of the Phelps Brothers Ministry. “My ancestors on both sides were involved in ministering to the Southern Illinois region by preaching the gospel through the word and music. They handed down to us the desire to help establish churches and unite our communities with God in the center. Through our ministry (Phelps Brothers) of gospel music and my public service in both the State Legislature and Congress, people from all over this great nation know that Saline County in Southern Illinois is a place where family values and faith in God are still strong.” Phelps adds, “I am proud that my roots are deeply seeded in faith-based heritage, where hard-working people still recognize from whence cometh our strength.”

Phelps’ spiritual enthusiasm is shared by residents of different faiths and congregations throughout this wonderful area. Saline County worship options vary in more than just type. Worshipers can choose from large, urban-like or small, quaint congregations; stately historic or strikingly modern facilities; and traditional or contemporary worship services. With only a few rare exceptions, the churches of Saline County will be able to meet your own personal spiritual requirements.
